I’ve been putting together some very clear, very succinct final campaign messages to send out to voters headed into Tuesday. Here’s one of them.
I’d like you to vote for me in the Democratic primary for Congress this Tuesday.
And why should you vote for me as opposed to the other folks who are running?
Well, there are two other people who are running in the Democratic primary. One is a very nice lady from Lynchburg, Dr. K, a family physician who’s running on the issue of health care and health care reform. And I totally respect that. I think that’s important. But there’s another issue I think is bigger, more important, something we have to tackle first before we can get to that.
The other person running is a long-ago former congressman, a guy who’s been running for one thing or another for the last 20 years, named Tom Perriello. The name might be familiar to you. The thing is that Tom’s strength is that he has a lot of political experience, and I think his weakness is that he has a lot of political experience. He has a message that’s very much sort of boilerplate Standard Democratic Candidate Running for Congress. And it’s not the specific, focused message and agenda that I have.
My agenda is about the fact that we need to reclaim the power of Congress, especially reclaim it from a president who’s been trying to take it away—and a Congress, including our incumbent Republican Congressman John McGuire, who have been letting him do it, who have been giving away their power, just serving as rubber stamps for Donald Trump.
We need to reclaim the power of Congress, and I’ve got a plan for how to reassert that power.
One other thing: I got a message from somebody saying, “Hey, I voted for you. I don’t think you’re going to win, but I like your message about focusing on the constitutional issues. And I voted for you to send that message.” And I think that’s terrific, because first of all, I approve this message, as we politicians say. I think it’s a good message to send. But also, if enough people want to send that message, then they’ll also send me, the messenger, to go to Washington, DC to stand up for the people of the 5th District and to stand up for the power of Congress.
