I cut straight to the question a lot of Democrats in the Fifth District have: Why not just vote for Tom Perriello?
Perriello is, of course, Mr. Establishment, the well-known, safe, and comfortable option.
I use an example from a profile of the Democratic candidates yesterday by a Lynchburg TV station. Here is Tom’s answer on data centers:
“Where communities oppose data centers, I’m gonna fight like heck next to them to make sure those data centers don’t come in. And where a community wants a data center, I will fight equally as hard to make sure they get the best terms available.”
Spoken like a true politician. Like data centers? He’s with you! Don’t like data centers? He’s also with you! All things to all people.
It could be worse, and I’m on record that after the primary, if Tom wins, I will support him over the Republican incumbent, John McGuire, who does not represent the people of the Fifth District and only answers to Donald Trump.
And yet, this is the paradox of democracy. We want a politician who responds to the will of the people—but someone who is not just a human weathervane.
We want someone who stands for something, who will lead and not just follow.
I recently criticized Senator Mark Warner—one of Perriello’s allies—on the question of impeachment, where he was sticking a finger in the air to the test the winds before taking a stand.
My agenda is first and foremost about defending democracy and restoring the power of Congress. We need someone who believes in that cause, not just someone who will do it if the polls happen to look good at the moment.
This is why I stayed in the race. We have some things to do that are too important. We need someone where we can have 100% confidence that he’s going to meet the moment and take on these issues.
That’s the center of my agenda, and that’s why I’m asking you to vote for me instead of the other guy.
