This is my response to recent comments by Senator Mark Warner preemptively ruling out another impeachment of Trump by a new Democratic Congress. This sort of thing is precisely why I’m not satisfied with the existing Democratic leadership and why I’m running for Congress.

Key points:
Congress should never relinquish its most powerful tool for reining in the executive, no matter who is president.
Avoiding impeachment (or anything else) because it might “appear” like retribution creates a “Fox News veto.” If Fox whips up a hysteria about how any attempt to hold the president accountable is a “witch hunt,” then we have to back down. And if there’s anyone who should be immune from Fox News propaganda, it should be a Democratic Congress.
We don’t need “retribution”—which is what Trump is actually doing against his political enemies—but we do need accountability for very real crimes and abuses committed by this administration.
To insist on accountability for the executive, which is the whole job of Congress, we need someone in Congress who won’t habitually stick his finger in the wind before asserting the legitimate powers of Congress. And I have to point out that my main rival, Tom Perriello is friends with and is endorsed by Senator Warner, so you can see how I’m concerned he’ll make similar decisions.
This is why I’m running, because I’m not confident in the resolve of the existing Democratic establishment and its candidates to do the job Congress needs to do. And I’m running on the promise to make sure we assert the authority of Congress on behalf of the American people.
