It's Official: I'm Running in the New Sixth District
The districts have changed, but the big issue remains the same.
Well, it’s nice to know finally what district I’m running in. [Update: Hah!]
The voters of the Commonwealth have chosen to create new congressional districts to counterbalance Donald Trump’s spree of racial and partisan gerrymandering. I will be running for Congress where I’ve already been spending most of my time: the new Sixth District that runs from Charlottesville down to Lynchburg, over the mountains to Waynesboro, Staunton, and Harrisonburg, and down to Roanoke and Blacksburg.
I’m excited that this new district offers a balance of colleges and rural, agricultural areas, which reflects my own background and my connections with the district. And despite the caterwauling about unfairness by the old Sixth District incumbent Ben Cline, who has gotten used to coasting into office every two years without ever having to reach across the aisle, this is a far more competitive district than he has ever run in. It’s a good district for a rural Democrat who knows the concerns and speaks the language of rural and independent voters.
The people of the new Sixth District need a representative who will stand up for everyone, defending their interests and their constitutional rights, rather than just another rubber-stamp for whatever crazy idea Donald Trump springs on the country.
Now that the redistricting referendum is over, we can focus again on the Democratic primary, where I’m the only candidate who is putting this constitutional balance of power at the front and center of my campaign.
I’m not a lifelong politician who has always wanted to be in office or who has always been running for something. I’m here for one reason only. Over the past year and a half, we’ve seen our American system slipping away, with masked goons on the streets asking us for our papers and comedians threatened for daring to make fun of the president—while he starts foolish wars, imposes ruinous tariffs, and builds vast gilded monuments to himself without even bothering to ask our representatives for permission. Donald Trump has been turning our constitutional rights into a memory and reducing Congress to irrelevance—and it’s long past time to fight back.
The districts have changed, but the big issue remains the same. We need a candidate who is prepared and focused for an epic political battle to restore the US Constitution and make Congress effective at serving the American people for a change. I’m excited to offer that vision to the voters of the new Sixth District.
